Introduction to standard maritime communication phrases (SMCP). Blended learning
Collective

To obtain the Course Certificate, trainees must be Masters Merchant  Navy Officers, MRCC/VTS Operators, Pilots, Port Operators (Shipping Agents, Stevedoring Companies)

Goals

Use SMCP and communicates effectively in line with their roles and responsibilities. Send and respond to Emergency, Traffic, and Port Operations messages and alerts following standard communications. Correct use of the English language when handling crises in a maritime environment. Appropriate use of the message markers established by the SMCP in its communications. Difference between emergency, safety, distress, SAR and routine communications. Establish correct communications with other agents in the port environment, as well as with services related to other maritime activities. Correct oral communication in English (intonation, rhythm, pronunciation...)

 

Methodology

Theoretical presentation of concepts, procedures and modelling techniques. In addition to the contents of the virtual campus and the teaching resources available on it, the teaching staff will mainly use active methods based on active listening and repetition by the students of the recommended SMCP terms and phrases in the specific situations presented, simulating real situations that demonstrate and highlight which terminology should be used in each specific situation.

SAR and VTS communications in port operations.

Practical Training:

The practical sessions will include the use of VTS, Manoeuvring and Navigation, and Emergency Management simulators as tools to generate a context in which to practice SAR and VTS communications in port operations.

Duration

The course consists of 30 teaching hours that will be delivered over 3 days at the Jovellanos Centre, plus 5 days on the virtual campus.
