This course has been designed for Captains, Chief Engineers, and Officers of any type of vessel who wish to sail under a British flag or who require the Marlins written test.

Goals

Marlins is a worldwide registered trademark of Seatec UK Limited. Marlins was originally established in 1994 to provide English language training solutions for the shipping industry. Since then, it has become a certificate acknowledged by a large number of shipping companies.

The Marlins Written Exam and the Marlins Test of Spoken English (TOSE) are methods acknowledged by the British MCA (Maritime Coastguard Agency) to assess English language skills to obtain the CEC (Certificate of Equivalence Competency).

Therefore, it is a highly-valued test in the world shipping industry, and the Marlins Test has actually become the only requirement for many shipping companies and crewing companies regarding fluency in English.

Methodology

The test consists of two parts and takes about 20 minutes to complete:

Part A: A personal interview with some introductory questions to establish the trainee’s level (Basic / Intermediate / Advanced).

Part B: Two parts adapted to the trainee’s level:

Description of images / situations.

Topics for discussion and “Role Play”.
